CFD Analysis of Cyclone Separator for Improved Separation Efficiency

Introduction

Cyclone separators are commonly used in industrial applications for the separation of solid particles from gas or liquid streams. However, their separation efficiency depends on a range of factors such as the geometry of the separator, the flow rate, and the size and density of the particles. In this case study, we describe a CFD analysis of a cyclone separator used in a chemical processing plant to improve its separation efficiency.

Objective

The objective of this study was to identify the flow patterns and particle trajectories inside the cyclone separator, and to optimize its geometry and operating parameters to improve its separation efficiency.

Methodology

The CFD analysis was carried out using the commercial CFD  software. The geometry of the cyclone separator was modeled using a 3D CAD software, and the mesh was generated using the Meshing tool.

The model was then solved using the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) for turbulent flow and the Discrete Phase Model (DPM) for the particle tracking.

Results and Conclusion

The CFD analysis revealed that the existing geometry of the cyclone separator was not optimized for efficient particle separation. The simulations showed that a large fraction of the particles were not separated, and were carried over with the gas stream. Based on the results of the CFD analysis, several modifications were proposed to improve the performance of the cyclone separator.

These modifications included changes to the inlet velocity profile and the addition of a vortex finder to the geometry. The modified design was then simulated using CFD to evaluate the separation efficiency. The simulation results showed that the modified design improved the separation efficiency by more than 30% compared to the original design.

Based on our experience, a combination of 5-7 inflation layers on the wall in conjunction with the SST k-omega turbulence model has proven to be the best practice for cyclone separators of various types.
