Introduction to Data Center
Efficient cooling is crucial for data centers to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and energy efficiency. As infrastructure expands, issues like hot spots, uneven airflow, and high energy consumption become significant challenges. A leading data center client approached CFD Consultants India with concerns over persistent hot spots in high-density server racks, inconsistent airflow, and rising operational costs. Additionally, the client sought to ensure compliance with ASHRAE thermal guidelines, which specify an inlet temperature range of 18°C to 27°C (64.4°F to 80.6°F) and an allowable range of 15°C to 32°C (59°F to 89.6°F) for IT equipment.
Problem Identification
The client’s data center posed unique challenges due to the absence of a raised floor, making airflow management more complex. Without proper airflow pathways, hot air recirculation near server racks resulted in uneven cooling and temperature spikes beyond ASHRAE-recommended limits. This inefficiency not only compromised equipment reliability but also led to increased energy consumption and operational costs.
CFD Analysis Approach
To address these challenges, we performed a comprehensive CFD analysis. Two configurations were considered: the existing setup without a raised floor and a proposed layout incorporating a raised floor system. Our CFD model included detailed geometry of server racks, CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) units, containment systems, and obstructions. Precise heat loads for each server rack were modeled based on power consumption, while CRAC units were simulated with accurate airflow rates and temperature settings. Fine meshing was applied near critical areas to ensure accurate predictions of airflow distribution and thermal performance.
Results and Observations
The simulation of the existing layout revealed hot air recirculation zones near the top racks, causing localized temperature spikes that exceeded ASHRAE limits. Airflow distribution was uneven, with inadequate delivery to high-load racks. On the other hand, the raised floor configuration showed significant improvements. Perforated tiles directed airflow effectively to high-load racks, ensuring uniform temperature distribution and minimizing hot and cold air mixing. This solution not only eliminated hot spots but also reduced energy consumption by 25%, leading to improved Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).

By maintaining inlet temperatures within ASHRAE limits and achieving significant energy savings, we ensured the data center’s operational reliability and compliance with industry standards.
